Two weeks ago my friend had a mysterious illness. She had red spots in her body, she has body pains and a slight fever. The symptom is similar to dengue but the lab test results on her indicate that it is a different strain of viral infection. The doctor can’t tell yet what type of virus it is.

This morning while watching the news, i’ve learned about another type of  dengue-like virus which is called Chikungunya virus.

Chikungunya virus is an insect-borne virus, of the genus Alphavirus, that is transmitted to humans by virus-carrying Aedes mosquitoes. There have been recent breakouts of CHIKV associated with severe illness.

CHIKV infection causes an illness with symptoms similar to dengue fever, with an acute febrile phase of the illness lasting only two to five days, followed by a prolonged arthralgic disease that affects the joints of the extremities. The pain associated with CHIKV infection of the joints persists for weeks or months, or in some cases years.- Wikipedia

The symptoms are similar to what my friend had so it could be a case of Chikungunya virus. The news report also showed that many residents in Sorsogon are suffering from this illness.

It seems like there’s no longer safe place here on earth because we know that insects are just all over our environment. We never know if the mosquitoes or insects around us are carrying a deadly virus. So we should keep ourselves physically fit at all times. Make sure our immune system is strong so we can fight the virus in case we are inflicted by it. And also keep let’s keep our environment clean as preventive measure.
